“A Time and a Season”

There is “A Time and a Season” for everything.  We’ve all heard that phrase at different points in our lives.  Generally, we’ve heard it from a sage elder statesman or elder stateswoman or perhaps even read it in one of our favorite books.  Whatever the case might be, we’ve reached that place in this phase of our evolution.

Life is amazing as the forces of nature can, will and often do conspire to move us forward, to stretch us beyond our comfort zones and perceived levels of development.  It calls us to even greater areas of enlightenment, purpose and responsibility.  Such is the case for me; that time is now and that season has come.

So, effective COB on 27 Sep 12, I’m transitioning from life with the North Texas Small Business Development Center network and to life as an independent consultant with Woods Consulting Group.  I will continue to publish the Veterans Business Resources blog and Facebook page.  I will continue to serve – Mission First, Soldier Always!

This platform allows me the unique and special opportunity to share with and serve a community of Veterans, patriots and entrepreneurs interested in making the U.S. Government their #1 customer.  With your help, we can take this message and these lessons to an ever-increasing audience.  The time and season to spread this message is now.  Will you help us?

Risk vs. Reward

Our investment broker approached me about investing in a highly speculatively venture.  He warned that I could loose 100% of my investment or I could hit it really big!  Those were the two options.  Those were the two extremes.  The final decision was mine and mine alone.  Take it or leave it.

As in life, those willing to take the biggest risk generally get the biggest reward.  We’ve all heard “to the victor go the spoils.”  Now that we all already understand Risk vs. Reward, let’s apply that understanding to federal contracting.

The government wants to minimize its risk and reduce its exposure.  But, what does that look like?  It looks like solicitations that come out everyday.  The government searches around to find the person or company with the most compelling response, cost, delivery, schedule or whatever is most important to them at the time.

The company willing and capable of taking on significant risk and relieving the government of that burden gets to partake of significant reward from the government.  That reward typically comes in the form of contract awards and healthy paydays.  When will you get your reward from the government?

Why you and not me?

Have you ever asked yourself that question about some event, circumstance or situation in your life?  Perhaps it happened way back in junior high or high school.  Perhaps it involved a boy or a girl that you wanted to take to dinner and a movie.  Maybe it wasn’t that earth shattering at all.  Maybe it was as simple as being chosen to play in a pick-up game of basketball, jump rope or dodge ball.

Why choose that other person and NOT me?  Can’t you see I’m just as passionate, just as committed, just as deserving as that other person?  Can you articulate why you should be chosen?  Why do good things always seem to happen to and for that OTHER person and NOT you?

One possible answer is MARKETING.  Everything we do is marketing.  Everything we say is marketing.  The way we look and dress is marketing.  The books and magazines we read is marketing.  The people we associate with is marketing.  The ideas we discuss is marketing.

Think about MARKETING the next time you find yourself asking “why them and not me?”  How well are you MARKETING your brand?
